How Moms Can Lighten the Mental Load to Make More Space for Themselves

A lighter mental load? Yes, please! But if you’re like me, the motivation to simplify and streamline often leads to a longer to-do list with complex systems that intend to make life easier, but usually overcomplicate the process. Typically, for me, this situation ends in decision fatigue and burnout, undercutting all of the effort I put into achieving the desired result in the first place. Super frustrating.

When you’re low on bandwidth, adding to your plate isn’t sustainable. The persistent nudge from social media and society or even friends and family to just “do more” can be discouraging when you’re already giving it your all. If this cycle sounds familiar, it’s time to get off the hamster wheel and implement strategies that may actually help you accomplish your goals without further straining the mental load.

Why creating more systems isn’t helping

Overcomplicating daily, weekly, or one-off responsibilities with intricate schedules and systems or rigid structure can distract from the end goal when you get caught up in the details and miss your target. If this cycle burns you out, decision fatigue can set in and lead you right back to where you started.

    What actually helps

    Automation
Systems that can run on their own work in your favor. Consider subscribing to a diaper delivery (which often comes with a discount), a pet food subscription, or use your grocery store’s app to reload your digital cart or autopopulate a shopping list based on your recent purchases.

    Shared responsibility
Little kids love to be big helpers. By including them in age-appropriate tasks like setting or clearing the table, moving pajamas to the hamper in the morning, or putting their clean clothes away, you help instill healthy habits as they grow. If you’re a perfectionist, you might need to adjust your expectations as they learn, but the payoff yields a lighter mental load for you and life skills for your littles. If your household includes a partner, parent, or older child, share the load in ways that make sense for your family. My husband is an early riser and I’m a night owl. At night, I load the washer. In the morning, he adds detergent and presses start. By the time I’ve started my day, I can move the laundry to the dryer. We also alternate who does the bedtime routine at night and who does the post-dinner clean up to keep responsibilities evenly distributed. The Mama Mode chore distributor makes household tasks a nag-free no-brainer. It’s one more way to automate and share responsibility so that you can set it and forget it.

    External memory
You can’t remember everything all the time and it’s not worth the effort to try. Write. It. Down. Sync your Google calendar to the Mama Mode app and seamlessly manage, categorize, and track appointments and dates in Mama Mode, with optional text message or push reminders for yourself, your partner, your mom, or whoever needs to be in the loop.

    Where to start

    Brain dump
Open the quick sticky notes tool in Mama Mode and get it out of your head and onto (digital) paper.

    Delegation
Everyone can play a part in keeping your household humming along. Delegate some of the responsibilities and tasks weighing you down and if it isn’t working out? Regroup and reassign. The goal is to lighten the mental load, not to create more stress.
